About MC...
Main Campbell Hall is named for Theodorick Pryor Campbell, a professor of modern languages and dean of the college in the 1920's. Due to the success of the Honors community in Hillcrest Hall, University Honors expanded the on-campus Honors residences to include Main Campbell in the fall of 2005. Originally including only the first floor and half the second floor, the community expanded in its second year to include the first two floors of the building.
A variety of majors from every college at Virginia Tech can be found in Main Campbell. The community was founded to be self-policing in regard to the academic standards upon which it was built. Thus, in the fall of 2006, several students oversaw the formation of an Academic Standards Committee and the writing of that committee's constitution. The committee enforces the 3.5 GPA standard with minimal involvement of faculty. Each semester, community members are also required to enroll in Colloquium Magnum, an honors reading and discussion group. Members of the community are primarily responsible for determining the structure of this course.
In addition to academic traditions such as colloquium, the community has developed lasting social traditions in its short history. At the beginning of each fall semester, incoming freshmen acclimate to Virginia Tech and Main Campbell with the help of volunteer MC mentors. Each September, Main Campbell holds its annual Joust, an epic tradition where members ride "horses" and use "lances" to dismount their opponent. Also, Main Campbell maintains a healthy rivalry with sister hall Hillcrest through Nerdfest, a series of competitive events held each semester. Officially, the prize for winning Nerdfest is Bill's Chair, a donation from one of Main Campbell's first graduate mentors. The communities encourage its members to take back the chair from the rival hall through any means necessary. Any and all of Main Campbell's antics can be found recorded on the dorm's YouTube series The MC.
As Main Campbell enters its fourth year, its residents continue to shape its identity through academic excellence and unique personalities. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and grow stronger year by year to make sure prospective members have a lot to look forward to and even more to contribute. For as many lessons as theme housing and the college experience have to teach us, the MC shows us all something invaluable: the meaning of family and community. With all the community has accomplished in its short existence, the world can surely expect even greater things in the future.
